Hemorrhoid Banding: What to Expect

Click here to learn about treatment

Hemorrhoids are the result of swollen veins in or around the anus and rectum, which can lead to rectal pain and bleeding and discomfort when sitting down. The condition is common, and one that many people (particularly older adults) will experience at least once during their lifetime. The good news is that this problem often resolves itself; however, if you have internal hemorrhoids that are causing your serious pain then it may be time to turn to one of our gastroenterologists here at Houston Digestive Diseases Consultants.

There are many ways to find relief from hemorrhoids. You may have tried daily Sitz baths, pain relievers, or adding more fiber to your diet. Your doctor may also have prescribed a topical anesthetic to help with any pain you’re experiencing; however, if your hemorrhoids are severely painful or begin to bleed then you may benefit from getting hemorrhoid banding.

When Should You Consider Hemorrhoid Banding

Hemorrhoid banding is only used to treat internal hemorrhoids, which develop within the lining of the anus and rectum. Before undergoing this procedure, our gastroenterologist will sit down with you and make sure that you understand what to expect from the procedure and provide you with information on things you should avoid prior to the procedure (e.g. taking certain medications; eating or drinking anything before).

It’s a good idea to have someone come with you to your appointment. This procedure is a simple outpatient procedure that is most often performed under local anesthesia; however, some cases may require the surgery to be performed under general anesthesia. This is something that your gastroenterologist will address with you prior to your procedure.

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, your doctor will insert a scope into the rectum to locate the hemorrhoid. Then a litigator is inserted into the scope to place a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. This will be performed on any and all hemorrhoids that are found during this procedure. It only takes a few minutes to perform hemorrhoid banding.

What To Expect After the Procedure

After the procedure, the hemorrhoid will eventually fall off, but this can take weeks. Many people don’t even notice passing the hemorrhoid. Since this procedure is minor, side effects after hemorrhoid banding are rare.

If you are dealing with internal hemorrhoids that are causing your pain or serious rectal bleeding, then call Houston Digestive Diseases Consultants to schedule a consultation and to find out if hemorrhoid banding may be right for you.
